Sofia is committed to a design process that acknowledges the history of a place, where the act of building becomes rooted in its surroundings through site, material, and landscape. Her path toward design was shaped by her architect father, as she spent summers working with her family to restore a 1940s Usonian-style house, repairing wood paneling, quarried stonework, and large windows that connect the home to the surrounding wooded ravine. This hands-on experience with construction and restoration continues to inform her approach at Schwartz/Silver, where she has worked on a range of library projects that respond carefully to their historical context. She holds a B.S. in Architecture from the Ohio State University and an M.Arch from the University of Virginia, where she held teaching positions and developed a range of research projects on water politics, the design of infill housing under zoning reform, and material reuse. These efforts culminated in her co-authoring In Search of Spatial Scripts, published by ORO Editions in 2026. The book uses collages to connect ideas of memory, reuse, and collaboration across generations. Outside the office, Sofia enjoys exploring Boston’s historic coastal landscapes, where she is either birdwatching, documenting her favorite flowers, or developing a design-research proposal that reframes value in a neglected salt marsh.
